FAQ - OPM removal
What is OPM?
Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) caterpillars are notorious pests of oak trees, posing significant risks to both tree health and human/animal health. Introduced to England in 2005, OPM infestations have been primarily concentrated in London and its surroundings. Forest Research has produced a leaflet detailing more information about their impact and control methods across Britain here. SJ Arborists are equipped to remove OPM from your beloved oak trees and are dedicated to keeping you and your environment safe.

Hazards of OPM infestations
OPM caterpillars feed voraciously on oak tree leaves, potentially defoliating entire trees. This not only compromises the aesthetic appeal of the affected trees but also weakens them, making them more susceptible to secondary pests, diseases, and environmental stresses such as drought.
Moreover, the caterpillars possess tiny hairs containing a potent irritant protein called thaumetopoein, capable of causing skin rashes, eye irritation, sore throats, and breathing difficulties in humans and animals. The risk of exposure to these hairs peaks during May and June, posing a particular threat to children, pets, tree workers, and individuals in proximity to infested trees.

Our specialised OPM removal service
At SJ Arborists, our trained operatives equipped with specialist Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are adept at identifying and safely removing OPM nests. Utilising industry best practices, we ensure thorough nest removal while minimizing the risk of dispersing harmful caterpillar hairs.
Upon removal, OPM nests are securely contained and transported to our depots in sealed containers. Subsequently, they are entrusted to licensed hazardous waste disposal experts for high-temperature incineration, guaranteeing the complete eradication of the pest without any risk of spread or environmental contamination.
